A System of Time Accounts for Melbourne

This report was commissioned by the Department of Infrastructure, Victoria, to gain perspectives on how Melburnians use their time, specifically to increase our understanding of how people travel in Melbourne. This exploratory study is a world-first case study of time-use data for a large metropolis. It increases our knowledge in an emerging field of statistics that measures how communities use their time. The results of this and future studies on travel behaviour will enable those responsible for transport provision in Victoria to better understand the needs of people using its transport networks and services.

Daily Living in Australia : A Survey of Housing, Clothes, Meals, Trips and Care

Each day households provide the bulk of the community's needs for accommodation, meals, transport, clean clothes and personal care.

The aim of the ARC funded survey of "Daily Living in Australia" was to investigate and value the very large contribution households make to the economic welfare of our community everyday throughout the year. The total value of the accommodation, meals, transport, clothes care and personal care provided on an unpaid basis by households is known as the "Gross Household Product" (GHP). Preliminary estimates show that GHP is similar in size to the value of production provided by the market, "Gross Market Product" (GMP).

To help estimate the value of this enormous daily production by households, data on daily living was collected in December 2004 and January 2005. A random sample of households in Melbourne were asked to keep a personal diary of their daily living activities for all household members, including children, for a week.

A simple booklet was provided for each member of the household to keep a record of the meals they ate, the trips they made and the clothes they wore. The diary also asked respondents to record the accommodation and care they received over the week.

The survey was divided into two parts. Part One was called the Household Form and contained questions about the household's usual residents and current housing accommodation. To download a copy of the Household Form click here.

Part Two consisted of the Personal Consumption Diary. To download a copy of the Personal Consumption Diary - Adult Diary click here. To download a copy of the Personal Consumption Diary - Child Diary click here

The results from this survey will assist all Australian families, households, communities and policy makers to make informed decisions that will promote a more balanced society in terms of leisure, work and care. The data collected from this sample of households will also provide output-based estimates of the value household production which will be superior to the existing input-based estimates.
