As a postgraduate student in the Department of Economics, you can expect to
take full advantage of a comprehensive range
of Departmental facilities and support mechanisms.
For some students these will include a photocopy
allowance, conference support and interlibrary
loans.
The Department provides PhD students with supervisor support (and
for full-time PhD students, physical
and financial support) to enable you to produce high quality theses and
to participate in Department research and professional activities. In the first
instance you should discuss your needs with your supervisor. As an indication, the
following lists the types of support normally provided. If you have special, or
additional needs these can be arranged with your supervisor
and the PhD Co-ordinator.
At
lease one full-time academic staff member,
and often one or two additional members,
is appointed to supervise the thesis component
of your PhD. You and your supervisor(s)
meet regularly to help define and refine
your thesis topic, to review and evaluate
work in progress, to provide advice and
assistance, and to comment on chapter drafts
and ultimately a draft thesis.
For their thesis, students
can also consider choosing a supervisor
from the Melbourne Institute. Staff specialise
in applied economic and social research
topics, particularly in the areas of labour
markets and policy, applied macroeconomics,
analyses using the HILDA longitudinal survey,
applied microeconomics and health economics.
Further details can be obtained from
www.melbourneinstitute.com
In addition, each year
you will present at least one progress report
on your thesis topic to an audience of PhD
students and academics.
PhD students are required
to participate in Departmental seminars
and workshops, and to join in with other
regular Department activities.
Full-time PhD students will be provided with the following:
- hardware and software to support PhD activities. Your
needs will be assessed by your Supervisor and by the Department's
IT Co-ordinator.
- full access to Departmental IT support services.
Depending
upon the allocation of space from the Faculty
of Economics and Commerce, the Department
endeavors to provide each full-time PhD student with a workstation
and work area (particularly through the thesis writing phase).
Full-time PhD students are entitled to a maximum of 1000 sheets of photocopying per
semester. Part-time PhD students are entitled to a maximum of 500 sheets of
photocopying per semester.
PhD students (both full and part-time) are entitled to 10 interlibrary loans per
year.
If you are a full-time PhD student enrolled in the Department
we will fully financially support your attendance
at one national conference, provided you
are presenting a paper, during the duration
of your PhD. It is preferable that the conference
be in your final year of candidature. In
addition, at the discretion of the Head
of Department, the Department may also support
your attendance at an overseas conference
as a presenter.
Reimbursement of costs associated with research activities (eg survey mailouts,
costs of experiments and data) is at the discretion of the Head of Department, who
will act on the advice of the candidate's Supervisor. Applications are assessed
on a case by case basis.
